Since
their initial discovery by H. J. Round
in 1907, light emitting diodes (LEDs)
have grown to be an important component
in the field of road safety.
Today they are available and applicable
in almost all colours used by the traffic
industry.
Their
advantages - such as their low power
consumption and long LED life - mean
they are suitable for areas of application
which not only improve safety, but also
reduce costs medium-term, because maintenance
expenditure can be drastically reduced.
LED
- GUIDANCE SYSTEM "SWAROLINE"
SWAROLINE is considered being the
pioneer in modern LED traffic guidance.
It is a highly effective optical guidance
system used to delineate the course
of a carriageway in a tunnel or gallery.
This is particularly important at
the entrance to a tunnel, where the
eye must first adapt to the new lighting
conditions.
The SWAROLINE system uses one or more
control units, depending on the length
of the tunnel, to control LED modules
which are connected via cables. These
modules should ideally be installed
on the kerb or tunnel wall.
The modules are equipped with highly
intensive white, red, yellow, green
or blue LEDs. The brightness of the
LEDs can be adjusted. Switchover from
daytime operation (high light intensity)
to night operation (reduced light
intensity) takes place automatically.
Power is provided via connection to
an existing mains supply or a solar
system. SWAROLINE uses very little
energy: e.g. annual energy consumption
for a 300 m long tunnel amounts to
approx. 200 kWh.
